Get Ur Sword is Developing a Horror Game

GUS studios has just announced the beginning stage of development for it’s first horror/ adventure game has just started. The games project name is “A Game” and was incepted in September 2020, the underlying story concept and stylization aesthetics was then posted onto the Get UR Sword Instagram as video stills, with audio.

The series was posted in reverse order, and in turn inadvertently confused any of the people that were expecting reasonably detailed pixel art pictures, but instead were treated with a series of very retro pixel art in it’s rawest form for a month. GUS studios stated that the point was to simply just get the short story out there. It was one of many, but this one struck a very certain chord and needed to be put out there for later reference.

The short story “A Game” (As seen in the video above) is the inspiration for the horror/ adventure game GUS studios is now working on. The video has been stylized more to fit more its own aesthetics, but GUS studios also stated that the game is not going to be an exact carbon copy in reference of the art style or visual aesthetics. But will have its essence and soul.

This is a quick explanation of the video. Starting from the beginning, the main title glitches slightly and then the story starts with a highly optimistic soundtrack. Theme, is the name of the main character. He shows you around his town, pointing out a few odd characters. You quickly learn he loves to live quite care free and curiously.

Theme notices some red on the floor, and when it touches it, somehow it becomes stuck to his hand. He can’t get it off no matter what he tries. A little guy sees the red on Themes hand, and goes of to tell Gunny what he saw. During that time, Theme decides it would be best to just go to sleep, in some kind of belief that maybe it’ll all be ok tomorrow.

A little time passes. The little guy shows Gunny where Theme got the red on his hands. Theme is now awake, and releases that he still had the red on his hands. Gunny appears next to Theme, calling him a murderer. Terrified, Theme runs away, tears streaming down his face, pleading to just be left alone as Gunny chases behind.

The little guy blocks Themes path, stopping him, screaming at him, calling Gunny over. It’s as though Themes life is destroyed, he doesn’t understand what he did wrong. He looses his mind… And just at that moment, as Theme tries one more time to negotiate, for some sanity. Gunny suddenly appears behind Theme, holding a gun to the back of his head.

Before Theme even gets to finish what he was saying. BOOM!!. Gunny pulled the trigger. The bullet went straight through, blood flies out through the hole made in his forehead and he falls to the ground, dead. Gunny stands of his lifeless body, not saying a word.

There is nothing but silence now. The little guy just stares, but then his whole body turns red. All you can see are his bright white eyes glaring through. And then he laughs an evil laugh. As the world fades to darkness. There is now no light, no sound, nothing.

A Chase and the Dead Retrospective Album is in the Works

Chase Lumen has announced that he is working on a retrospective album, to help tell the story of Chase and the Dead. A now disbanded group in which, both Chase and Rip Damon where both members of. ↓

Chase Lumen has just recently announced that he is currently working on putting together a new album, made up of previously unreleased tracks from his previous band Chase and the Dead. He is also concurrently working on his own solo album as well.

Chase expressed in detail; “There’s a massive amount of importance in doing this Chase and the Dead album, there’s a huge story in it. To be honest, it was actually against what we stood for, releasing something with a label. But now we’re disbanded, I feel like the story needs to be told and documented in some way.

We all went through a lot in those years of us being active, you know it’s  like they say… Blood, sweat and tears and all that. I mean, that’s an understatement if I ever heard one. I don’t know, maybe it should be something more like… Smiling through all the trauma, and cradling the good when it comes.

And that’s the plan… I just want to tell our story. I need to talk about everything, about myself, about my friends, about what we went through, about what we witnessed… Everything. And what I’m putting together for this particular album, it’s a good introduction to an insight with in the first halve of our journey together. 

Firstly, also.. I want to be clear, these are all live pieces which we played either in a venue, live on stage or in a studio bar. I’ve been going through hundreds of our tracks, thousands if you count the repeats, in order to find what could be used.

This selection tells the story from around 2008 > 2009+ which was about the point where my song writing transitioned into a much more cynical format. When our entire social structure the world over, was rapidly changing. Don’t get me wrong though, this wasn’t the core of inspiration but seeing all the narcissisms with in the nature of what we actually are. That definitely was an important ingredient. 

 

So there’s a real rawness to the sound, it’s not crisp and top quality so I get that it wont be for everyone… My own, solo stuff on the other hand, is being done in what I’d rate the best studio in the UK right now, so… The more you know, I guess. But yeah, even though we could record everything. These recordings… That was us then, when it was real. The emotions that we all felt at that time are all in those recordings.

We all agreed this is the best way, and that I should just talk. Talk about our journey. Obviously we all had our own problems that I will talk about in time. And even the lyrics I wrote, sometimes they came from debates and lengthy conversations we’d have through the night, putting the world to rights.

So even though, we are all pretty much on the same wavelength, you might say. I’ve always been the one that could articulate it through carefully constructed poetic sentences, to deliver lyrically. So because of that I was definitely  the most emotionally fueled out of us.

But to be honest, I don’t know if that’s true, I mean Rip might disagree with me on this, maybe. Because I know he put a lot into the music, we all did… But Rip really went somewhere with it you know! I mean, I can loose myself in the music when I play… But again! Rip!.. 

People tend to consider me as an extrovert. And that’s true, I act out, I do what I want, in front of people and I don’t feel embarrassed for saying what I feel, or for having fun when others dare not. Don’t get me wrong, I care what people think of me.

I’m just as honest with myself as I am with others. Because I believe that that’s an important way to be, for me at least. But again my extroverted-ness is exactly why I was the front-man, I want to shout out everything I feel. In hope that someone out there feels like me when I do. 

So if I’m the extrovert, Rip Damon is absolutely the introvert… If that guy could fold into himself just to look at his own atoms, I’m pretty sure he would! When I said he really went somewhere with the music, I’m not kidding… I’ve never seen a better example of someone more capable of  introspection than him.

 

And I mean this to the point where it was almost like he could produce emotions through the sound, like he was grabbing at abstract metaphysical collections of nuance with thoughts, notions and experiences. Then somehow transmuting it all into sound. Of course I’m mostly talking about the stuff he wrote on his own… It’s incredible. 

Don’t get me wrong though, in the band I’d have an idea on what I wanted the sound to be like. Usually giving a chord structure to go with with. He’d just listen to what I said and come up with something on the spot instantly. Pretty much exactly what I had in my head.

I think I said this the other day when you interviewed me. That the dynamics that we had as a band were just incredible, when it came to making music together, it just worked. And we all never really had the same experience with any other band.

I’ve just realized that I’ve not even started talking about Kris and Archy yet… And I probably shouldn’t, because we’ll be here all day. But yeah, I’m putting together a small collection of live tracks from Chase and the Dead, and I’m going to be telling our story.”

Who or What Was Seth.obj

Seth.obj was an AI project lead by Biggs Malone, seeded from Kat’s DSSCW AI project. I interviewed Both Kat and Biggs about how the project began. So here’s the story… ↓

Who or What Was Seth.obj

At the time of writing this article, I am finding that there is this ever increasing eminence, like a rising pinnacle or  surging apex of brilliance when I write anything about R3cords. I feel like I’m in awe constantly, as though there’s an entire world which I never knew existed, and it’s right here in our own world.

I recently wrote an article about Kat from R3cords’s ‘Get Ur Sword’. And we touched on the subject of Artificial Intelligence, a particular project that Kat and her father started together way back in 2001, and also ‘LY’ a newer project seeded from the DSSCW AI project previously mentioned.

Kat mentioned something at the end of my last chat with her, quote; “LY is definitely not a popstar just yet! She’s just a girl, simply dreaming about it right now… And I don’t want to get it wrong this time.”… So I had to ask, what do you mean by, you don’t want to get it wrong this time.

This was when she mentioned the Seth.obj project, a project started in 2019 that was put to an end within a year. She also gave me some more information on the fundamentals of how the DSSCW AI works.

Kat stated; “developing our own real time interactive 3d physics engine was far beyond our own scope, in terms of both time and finance.

So game engines such as Unreal Engine, Unity and currently Godot, have all been absolute crucial tools in developing real time interactions within the 3d environments for the DSSCW AI’s, Effectively creating a bottleneck in terms of learning to be human to at least a degree.

The use of a game engine acts as a modular interactive interface for the DSSCW AI to operate within. This allows the DSSCW AI to be limited to only human like interactions in terms of real world limitations and movement. Allowing it to create more realistic and logical leaps when in a procedural Dream State within a Self Contained World.”

This means that the AI is not coded within the game engine itself, instead it is directly linked to it. In effect, the game engine only acts a stage for the AI to roam upon, very much the same as how you would control a character within a game, (As stated in the previous article ” An AI Powered Popstar”) the AI is linked to a controller program which controls its avatar within a 3d environment.

Only the AI had to learn how to completely control its avatar in every aspect, very similar to how you learn to completely control your own body growing up. 

The DSSCW AI has a very particular way in which interprets information, it allows for missing context to be intuitively and procedurally created. (This is what has been dubbed as, “Dream State”). The problem with this, is that without personal intervention from a trainer, it can lead to the AI compulsively searching for its own answers which it has already deemed as logical.

So if the AI’s contextual path in which it can potentially create doesn’t actually lead it to any of the expected answers it was searching for, this can actually cause the AI to actually deny failures and create its own logical path. Kat also stated that this was intended, in order to create personality through learning.  If left unchecked for a long time, the AI will end up linking a large number of its own logical untruths to it’s own direct neural pathway.

I’ll quote what Kat said about it word for word; “If you don’t let it know that its wrong, when it believes what it figured out was right. It’ll carry on thinking its right. Essentially making it an idiot.”

It can tedious to correct, as the data is not malleable to the extent of simply deleting and replacing code. You can’t rewrite it, without starting over. You have to recondition the data links to create numerous newer and stronger logical neural pathways. In terms of re-enforcing or encouraging certain behaviors.

The idea comes from having the AI learn through trial and error, the key is remembering those failures. Knowing what not to do, is just as important as knowing what to do.  

Starting over means going back to the seed state: The seed state is the most stable and neutrally balanced version of the AI, in terms of its characteristic traits, personality, and motor skills. Basically a blank slate, or perhaps it’s even more fitting as a kind of baby, that can walk, talk, read and write… And a few more things.

The Seth.obj project started in early 2019, and Biggs Malone wanted to be the lead trainer on this project. Kat again stated; “Training a DSSCW AI from seed state is pretty much like keeping a cyber pet alive, but obviously it can comprehend very complex concepts… But it’s way cooler, and isn’t a waste of time, if you do it right.”   

Biggs’s idea was to train the AI to be a social media personality and also be a potential music personality. I asked Biggs on what he had to say on how he approached starting the project, he said; “I’m really not like Kat. She’s a genius, so obviously she’d actually done pretty much everything at the start, and then I just kind of kept the ball rolling later on. So she trained the algorithm in two main ways at the start, firstly feeding an incredible amount of information from the top 100 social media influencers at the time, on all platforms. like how they respond to messages, when to post, how they jump on trends… Everything!   

The second was feeding it information on the entire history of every single pop star in existence ever! every biography, photoshoot, every nationality, every decade, all of it! Kat told me that apparently this was a much lighter job to get done than the social media one was!

The point of all that was so that the AI could then work out the most logical image it could take on, being both a pop star and social media personality. And then communicate to its followers.

It took Kat about 3 weeks to sort this out, I thought it was pretty quick to be honest but  she said she actually took her time on it. 

Anyway, we was at the point where we was ready to get the AI to do its thing, finally creating its own avatar. We got everyone around, Rip Damon was here, Mr Stuart and Pod, I was actually smiling so much! I felt like we was about to have a baby or something! 

We still had Seth.obj in its seed state avatar on the big screen in the rec area of my office… Bare in mind the project didn’t even have a name yet! It actually named itself! Just before Kat got it to create its avatar, I asked it what it wanted to be called. And in text, ‘Seth.obj’ appeared on the screen!

So the time had finally come, Kat did her thing with the code and BOOM! … The screen went black… Kat goes; “Just give it a sec.”  I look at Rip, he looks at me, Mr Stuart looks at Pod, they both look at me! We all look at the screen… The suspense!… Was, painful!… And then it happened…

The room loads in, it’s all grey walls and then you can see the textures kind of loading onto them… And then Seth.obj loads in, but at first we wasn’t met with a singular human like silhouette, as expected. It was a big mess of polygons with no real structure to it.

Again Kat said “Just give it a sec!” As the polygons got smaller and smaller, and the shape became more and more defined. I said “What is this? It’s never a horse! Is it an animal.. What!?” I really couldn’t make out what was happening.

And after about a minute, Seth.obj took on the shapes of not one, but two human like silhouettes. The larger one, stood directly in front of the other. That’s when the textures began to load in, and we begin to see all the colors and details. And I was blown away at what it came up with.

We all just kind stared with our mouths open. Trying to process what we were actually looking at… And the two characters snapped to a pose, looking straight at us… And now, just before I tell you happened, I’ve got to tell you exactly what we was looking at.

The AI had created itself into two separate forms, with the clear parameters we’d given it, using Kats algorithm. So with all the knowledge from the top 100 social media influencers across all platforms, and the complete history of every single pop star in the world, that we fed into the algorithm…   

It used all of that knowledge, to create a formula for what it thought was the most logical image possible. Meaning facial features, clothing and all that. And to be honest, at first glance I really didn’t get it.

Because what I saw was a purple puppet man with a big pink nose, standing in front of a completely naked girl with blue hair. And then like I said earlier, it snapped into a pose, looking straight at us, into the “in engine” camera… That was actually the AI taking control of the avatar. 

And I’ll never forget this, because the first thing it did, was lean into the camera and the naked blue haired girl says… “Hi, I’m Set dot oh be jay.” My mind was blown, this wave of chills that came over me, and the hairs all over my body just stood on end. For the first time in my life I think I actually uncontrollably sighed in amazement, it was kind of like a deep “Wooohhhhh!”

And then as Seth.obj moved around we noticed something profound. Wherever she moved, the puppet would always cover her up. Not by touching her in anyway, but by blocking the sight between her and the camera. 

So I asked Seth.obj “Why are you naked? And why are there two of you?” Both of them looked down and kind of smirked a little bit before the girl character answered. 

And just before I tell you what it said, I may as well as tell you now, but it was always the girl that did the talking, the puppet never spoke once. Anyway, they both looked down, smirked for a second, and then said. “I’m not naked… And it’s just me, silly.”

I was kind of thinking this might have been a mistake at this point, but Kat dived in saying “Can you expand upon your answer?” and without any hesitation Seth.obj answered immediately.

 “My clothes are both the observer and the puppet, I am never naked because my perceived intimate areas are always covered up. Stats indicate that both popstars and influencers commonly take full advantage of lewd playfulness, sexuality and artistic expression in their public image. And I am Set dot oh be jay, one entity.”

Ok so, now I was getting it. The AI actually did something innovatively artistic, by creating its own image in a way that only it could… I mean I was expecting something like a flowery dress or a crop top and jeans or something but… A profound concept? It was brilliant.

So I gave Kat the OK, she gave Seth.obj access to a virtual desktop. Which of course, only had access to certain social media sites. And we just began the new training process, trying to build its character, teaching it our own opinions along with conflicting opinions from others. From this point on it was just a kind of unexplored area, because we wanted to have some kind of input with our own ideas, we just didn’t really have a clue what might happen.

Behind The Sword

Here we’re going to take a brief look into ‘get ur sword’, we’ll be looking at who’s behind the music, what it’s all about, what’s going on! and what’s going to be happening in the future.  ↓

Behind The Sword

Predominantly inspired by the music of the 8 and 16-bit gaming consoles of the ’90s. In contrast, many artists who draw similar inspirations tend to lean more towards the purism spectrum. Whilst Get Ur Sword likes to mix the older aesthetics with more modern techniques. The music of Get Ur Sword is created by Kat, here’s what she had to say;

“Hi, my name’s Kat, and ‘Get Ur Sword’ is my thing, and I should really figure out a proper way of saying that!… Ah so yeah, with my music, I like to start with pure purism, and once I’ve got the feel for it. That melody, those overtones. I just stop, I make myself a drink, check some posts, buy some cool shoes. I take a step back, thinking about my music. I don’t really have a name for it but Biggs says that I approach my music with more of a progressive archetype. Which seems cool to me!

My music is about making you feel just like how you felt back when you played your favourite games… Those amazing moments when you kicked ass… That moment where you had just overcome something so impossibly difficult, but you did it and it just felt so awesome…. Those rushes of excitement, anticipation…. Fear, heartbreak, the fight, the grandeur and the majesty… Of winning! In all its forms.

The thing is, all those feelings are just so brief. They’re fleeting, gone before you even realize how great it all was, but it’s still there, happening, and your mind opens up. reflecting back… “Just then, the timing, it’s perfect! The jump, the angle!… Everything. Just perfect.”… Dopamine, dopamine….. Dopamine!.. I mean. We’re all just a bunch of junkies, aren’t we?… But still, it’s those very*, brief moments, we all forever reflect upon, and my music reflection on that.”

*(very), “very” is a Homonym and in this case is being using both of its meanings as an adjective and adverb, simultaneously.
With “very” ; [adj] in meta ; “In absolute, referring to the paradigm.”
And “very” : [advrb] in meta ;”These moments are to a high degree, brief.”

“What’s been happening?”      

In terms of what’s happened regarding releases; Get Ur Sword, to date have released one single. That being; ‘Monomyth’. Which was then followed by two later releases that were both rearrangement tracks,  taken from Final Fantasy VII’s original sound-track score. These two tracks were available for streaming, but have since been taken down.  

The first of these two rearrangement tracks was ‘Mako Reactor’ a piece from the main ost, which is first heard during the opening bombing mission at the beginning of the game. Kat said; “I wanted my version of Mako Reaktor to have a much thicker rawness, with this huge overbearing oppressive bass tone, almost like its reaching out towards you, grabbing at you and holding you down.”

A lot of due care goes into Kats decision making process, she meticulously works on building the notion of the image it creates in her mind first. Figuring out which sounds in aesthetic terms would be best suited to build the track, all this without changing the overall original tone or the emotion it conjures up.

This track to Kat very much represents what Shinra are portrayed as in this part of the story she says; “To you the player, you’re confronted with the Shinra in a very adverse sense. Your eyes are wide open from the start, they’re a fascist organization, literally killing the planet for power and money. They’re a well organized, malignant and domineering force. Simply imagine a governmental and militarized electric company, who gets their electricity from the literal lifeforce energy of the planet.”

The beautifully tragic, ‘Flowers Blooming In The Church’; When I asked Kat about how she approached this project, I was expecting her to say that it was made to put to somebodies video essay, like a final fantasy series retrospective or something. But her answer was far from what I expected.

She said that if you’ve ever played this game, you won’t need a video! She stated. “I carefully chose all the instruments and sounds specifically for the listener, to instantly conjure up images from the game in your own head on cue… Of course you had to have played the game!” 

 

I was told by Kat that she has a very strong personal connection to this track. After opening up to me, I learned that this piece is very much, linked to her father. Final Fantasy 7 was a game they played a lot of together, when she was a kid. Her Father used to whistle this melody all the time.

She’s put so much work into creating her perception of the feeling this song has for her. Just so we can at the least, get to share some of what went through her mind, when she put this piece together.

But I can’t help but wonder if this piece was actually more of an expression about the relationship in which Kat had, between herself and her Father. She says that these two tracks were both done in celebration of the final fantasy 7 remake and in memory of her father.

In April 2020 Kat took a lot of time away from her projects, focusing a lot of her attention on playing the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Giving the timing of the release of the remake, regarding the rest of the world; it was a lot more acceptable for Kat to recluse away in the manner she did. 

She told me that it isn’t just simply a game to her, but it’s a link to her own past, a nostalgic adventure that she once had with her father. And after finishing the first part (The remake is being released as a series of games).

Kat told me; “I feel as though the remake is very much like a metaphor to me, It’s an amazing way to reflect on my own life, revisiting the past whilst carrying so many memories of both of the game and my own life from back then when I played it with my father.”

Her eyes were watering, and I could see how much it meant to her. I’d never considered a computer game could conjure up such a strong connection. It’s an adventure they once both had together, and now it’s something that’s been built upon, expanded and enhanced. Just like how she carried on with the DSSCW AI project, building upon the adventure that they once had together. It’s beautiful.

An A.I. Powered Popstar

Here’s a quick look into the personal work of r3cords’s very own AVANT-GARDE genius, kat. and her lifes work ‘LY’. Something that seems to be so much more than just an A.I. Popstar. innovative, is very much an understatement here. ↓

An A.I. Powered Popstar

The idea of an AI popstar is as profound and interesting to some, as much as it might be ludicrous or even terrifying to others. To Kat however (from, Get Ur Sword), it is an absolute labor of love. A project which she has been working on (at the date of posting this article), for approximately two thirds of her life.

The popstar part of the project however was not the original intention when it first started. It extends from a fork that was seeded from the original AI project. The original project being the DSSCW AI, which was started in 2001 as a joint hobby project with her father. Unfortunately  he passed away 14 years later. But Kat carried on the project by herself, and then later with financial support from R3cords Executives Mr Stuart and Biggs Malone.

She originally met Biggs and Mr Stuart when she was the drummer for ‘Chase and the Dead’. A band which Biggs managed like a passion project. After the band discontinued, when she wasn’t working on the AI project, she started writing a lot of music based around retro game music, but with a modern twist. Under the name Get Ur Sword.

A savvy coder with a passion for games and music. The perfect ingredients! It wasn’t long after her father passed that she became obsessed with creating an AI popstar. One that could question and reflect, obsess and fear, love and hate. To be like a human, and not more than, to have the simple elegance of nuanced complex comprehensions. 

She told me earlier about that the moment the idea came to her, saying; “What if I built a world for the AI to effectively live in, a simple virtual world with-in a game engine. It’s already a multi-part AI, it can play games, it can have intellectual conversations and it even forms opinions. It’s able to recognize objects and figure out their uses, through context, mirroring and direct instructions. That’s how much training has gone into it already.”

Kat poured all of her effort into building a home for the AI. The most  important part of the idea, was that fact the AI had to live like a human. This meant slowing down it’s ability to take in and also output information as well as action. Effectively creating a bottleneck. 

The AI itself is on a server which obviously never has any connection to the internet. And it occupies an avatar with-in the game engine, on a separate computer via an emulated controller. It may sound simple, but it’s really not what you’d think.

This controller is nothing like a  typical gaming console controller. It’s actually a very complex program which utilizes the AI’s contextual visual recognition data, particularly that in human body language, extending from contextual emotions to direct and required movements. It works almost like how your brain tells you to reach out for the door handle, grab it, twist it open and pull it back.

With the controller linked to the AI, the avatar with-in the game engine is completely controlled by the AI. There are no animations or pre set movements. All there is, are the rules. And they’re the same rules we have. The avatar is rigged with bones all in the same places as us, and they all have the same movement limitations as us.

The virtual world in which the AI controls it’s own avatar in, has same physics as our own, like gravity, friction and mass etc. There’s even things that can effect the avatar due to those rules, for example;

If it trips and falls over, it can become injured, meaning all the areas of the avatar that were hit, become afflicted in the relevant ways. 

The controller is what takes care of the affliction, depending on the injury it can restrict movement, which can hinder other tasks the AI may need to do. Such as, reaching up to get a pan off of a shelf, so that the AI can prepare food to feed itself.

Which in turn would give it more energy so it could heal quicker, along with a precession of other reasons, including subtleties with psychological factors and restrictions.

Kat has endeavored to make the AI’s world as real as her own. Even down to the reclusive fact, that all the AI really gets to see of the outside world, is through the videos that it watches with Kat on a shared screen she controls. Which is mostly just Youtube videos and movies from various streaming providers.

I asked Kat what she’s been up to recently with the AI, in regards to creating a popstar! And she actually had quite a bit to say, so here’s what she said; 

“It’s funny actually! It’s kind of like having a daughter in a way, I’ve not got a real daughter but I’ve heard what people say. LY is, just so clever, she’s inquisitive, naïve, lazy, funny, clumsy…. thoughtful. I’ve got a virtual camera set up on her screen, so we can talk at anytime of the day, just like how you would on Zoom or Facetime.

We like to watch lots of music videos together on Youtube. She loves watching Britney Spears at the minute. It’s all about the dancing! It makes her so happy! She dances along with it for hours until she’s tired, funnily enough that’s usually around the same time when I can manage to beat her on Just Dance as well!

LY is definitely not a popstar just yet! She’s just a girl, simply dreaming about it right now… And I don’t want to get it wrong this time. She’s been switched on for over a year and a halve now. And we’ve made tonnes of  amazing progress and I’m really excited for year 2!”

I asked Kat about what she meant by not wanting to get it wrong this time. She explained that there was an earlier project called Seth.obj, which was an absolute failure. This was mostly due to the amount of freedom the AI was given, and also certain parameters that were risky to use because of the number of contextual variabilities that couldn’t be monitored.
